Why Primer Choice Decides How the Finish Looks
Ask why a wall looks patchy, why a colour dried three shades off, or why a topcoat peeled away in sheets six months later, and the answer is almost always the same: the primer. Primer is the least visible product in any finishing job and the one that decides most of the outcome, which is an awkward combination because it is also the one people are most tempted to skip.
It helps to stop thinking of primer as a cheap first coat of paint. It is a different product doing a different job, and the fact that it happens to be white and go on with a roller is largely a coincidence.
What a primer is actually for
Primers do three jobs, and most products emphasise one of them. The first is adhesion: creating a surface the topcoat can grip, particularly over gloss, laminate, tile or anything previously painted with oil. The second is sealing: stopping a porous surface from drinking the topcoat unevenly, which is what produces a patchy sheen on new plaster or bare drywall. The third is blocking: stopping stains, tannins, smoke or water marks from bleeding through.
A product that does all three well is rare. Read the tin for which one it leads with, and match that to the problem you actually have.
Matching primer to surface
Bare drywall and new plaster
Porous, thirsty, and the classic cause of patchy finishes. You want a sealing primer, applied generously, and you want the surface fully cured first. New plaster in particular needs to be dry all the way through, not just dry to the touch; sealing wet plaster traps moisture and the finish will blister.
Gloss, semi-gloss and previously oil-painted surfaces
Nothing sticks to gloss. Here you need a bonding primer, and you need to abrade the surface first — a light key with abrasive paper is not optional, no matter what the tin claims about sticking to anything. Wipe the dust off afterwards with a damp cloth and let it dry.
Bare wood
Knots bleed resin and tannins, and they will keep bleeding through several coats of ordinary paint. A stain-blocking primer, spot-applied to the knots and then over the whole surface, is the only reliable answer.
Masonry, concrete and cement board
High alkalinity, high porosity and often dust. Masonry primers are formulated for the alkalinity; ordinary primers can saponify — literally turn soapy — against fresh concrete. Let new concrete cure for as long as the manufacturer specifies, which is usually weeks rather than days.
The specialty finish problem
Lime plaster, milk paint, stone-effect coatings and other decorative finishes are much fussier about what is underneath them than ordinary emulsion is. They are thin, they are often mineral-based, and many of them rely on a specific level of surface suction to develop their texture and colour.
That is why these products almost always specify their own primer, frequently one with sand or grit in it to give mechanical key. Substituting a general-purpose primer usually still sticks, but the finish looks different — flatter, more uniform, and without the depth the product was chosen for. If you are paying for a decorative finish, use the system primer.
Coverage, and why primer uses more than you expect
Primers are usually applied to the most absorbent surface in the job, so the first coat disappears faster than the topcoat will. Coverage figures on the tin assume a smooth, sound, moderately porous surface; bare drywall, textured render or anything sanded back will use noticeably more.
Estimate on the low end of the published range and buy accordingly. Running out of primer halfway across a wall creates a visible line where the two batches meet, and on a decorative finish that line can persist right through to the topcoat.
Recoat windows matter more than drying times
Two different numbers appear on most tins: dry to touch, and recoat or overcoat time. The second is the one that matters. Recoating too early traps solvent and softens the film; recoating far too late, on some bonding primers, means the surface has cured past the point where the topcoat keys into it, and the tin will state a maximum window if that applies.
Both numbers assume a temperature and humidity range that is also printed on the tin. In cold or damp conditions, add substantially to the stated time rather than trusting the touch test.
Tinted primer
Where a topcoat is a strong or deep colour, a primer tinted toward that colour reduces the number of finish coats needed, sometimes by a whole coat. Most primers accept a proportion of tint; the tin will say how much. It is a small step that saves real money on a large job and improves the evenness of a deep colour.
A short checklist before the first coat
- Is the surface clean, dry and dust-free?
- Is anything glossy abraded and wiped?
- Are knots and stains spot-treated with a blocking product?
- Is the primer the one the finish system specifies?
- Have you bought enough for one continuous coat, with a margin?
- Is the room temperature within the range printed on the tin?
