Lime Plaster on a Modern Wall: Preparation, Application and Cure

Polished lime plaster produces a depth of finish that paint cannot imitate: the surface reflects light differently as you move past it, and the colour shifts subtly across a wall. It is also the least forgiving product most people will ever put on a wall, and the majority of disappointing results come from the two days before the plaster was opened rather than from the application itself.

This is a description of what the job actually involves. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instruction sheet, which is the authority for any specific product.

The substrate decides everything

Lime finishes are thin — often under a millimetre in total across two or three passes. They cannot fill, they cannot hide, and they will telegraph every ridge, screw head and joint compound edge underneath them. A wall that looks acceptable under matt emulsion is frequently not acceptable under polished plaster.

The wall needs to be flat, sound and uniform in suction. That means filling, sanding to a genuinely level surface, and then priming with the system primer, which is normally a gritted product that gives the plaster something to key into and equalises how fast the wall pulls moisture out of it.

Uneven suction is the single most common cause of a patchy result. A wall where some areas are filler and some are old paint will pull water out of the plaster at different rates, and the finish will dry at different speeds and different tones.

Conditions in the room

Lime cures by carbonation — it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air, and that reaction needs time and moderate conditions. A hot, dry, draughty room will pull water out of the surface before the plaster has bonded, leaving a powdery finish. A cold, damp room slows the reaction until the surface stays soft for days.

Aim for the temperature range on the instruction sheet, close the windows against draughts while working, and avoid direct sun on the wall. Turn off any forced-air heating pointed at the surface.

The passes

Most polished lime systems use two or three passes with a stainless steel trowel, applied thin and worked in different directions. The first pass is about coverage and key. The second builds the body of the finish and starts to close the surface. The third — where a system uses one — is where the polish develops, worked with a clean trowel at a low angle and increasing pressure as the material stiffens.

Timing between passes is judged by feel rather than by clock. The surface should have gone from wet to firm but not hard. Too early and the trowel drags material off; too late and it will not burnish.

Work wall by wall, corner to corner, without stopping in the middle. A join in the middle of a wall will show; a join in a corner will not.

Burnishing and sealing

The sheen comes from compressing the surface with the trowel, not from a topcoat. That is worth understanding, because it means the level of shine is a decision made during application and cannot easily be added afterwards.

Many systems then take a wax or a mineral sealer, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens. Wax adds depth and some water resistance and needs occasional maintenance; mineral sealers are more durable and change the look less. Whether a sealer is required at all is a product-specific question, and applying the wrong one can cloud a finish permanently.

How long it really takes

For a single feature wall, expect preparation and priming on day one, application on day two, and the final polish or seal on day three, with the surface not fully cured for a fortnight or more. Lime continues to harden long after it looks finished.

Do not hang anything heavy, wash the surface, or move furniture against it during that period.

Practical realities worth knowing

  • Buy enough for the whole job in one batch. Colour varies slightly between batches and a wall finished from two batches can show it.
  • Keep a wet sponge and clean water to hand; dried lime on a trowel ruins the next pass.
  • Wear gloves. Lime is alkaline and will dry and burn skin over a few hours.
  • Practise on a spare board first. The feel of the material is the whole skill and half an hour of practice changes the result.
  • Mask thoroughly. Lime is much harder to remove from a floor once it has carbonated.

When not to use it

Lime finishes are a poor choice over surfaces that move, over unsealed damp walls, and in areas of constant direct water contact unless the system is specifically rated for it. They are also a difficult choice for a wall that will be repainted in two years, because removing polished lime is considerably more work than painting over emulsion.
